‘Other Transmissions’ will complete at The University of Salford, New Adelphi Gallery, from 1-31 Oct, where several works produced by the ‘Conversations Series II’ residency artists will feature alongside documentary material of the ‘Conversations Series II’ process, captured by the university’s BA Graphic Design students. Visual responses in the form of zines, riso-prints and film will be shown with the touring programme.
For one night only ‘Other Transmissions’ will present a film screening of the group film ‘ Other Transmissions Film’ at Paradise Works, Salford. This collaborative film consists of low-fi surreal episodes developed by the group, making use of green screen footage as well as 3D scanned imagery.
Participating artist Joe Beedles will also perform a one-off live intervention using light and sound reacting to audio in real time.
To coincide with the ‘Other Transmissions’ exhibition at Artlink Hull, Conversations Series II will present In-conversation where the participating artists; Joe Beedles, James Desser, Amy Ellison, Frances Heap, Andrew Johnstone and John Powell-Jones and Artist Facilitator James Pollitt, will talk more in depth about their experience the residency and their featured artworks.
‘Conversations Series II’ has supported six artists living and working in the North West of England to undertake a five-month residency at Venture Arts Studios in Hulme, Manchester. The artists are a diverse group of learning disabled and non-learning disabled artists selected based on the quality of their practice, and their openness to exploration, experimentation and collaboration. This series delves into feelings and thoughts about the labels placed upon people by society, and for artists and the art world more broadly.

29 March - 21 June, will see Artlink Hull playing host to Conversations Series II as part of its tour. This iteration of the series delves into feelings and thoughts about the labels placed upon artists by society, and the art world more broadly. Continual conversation and a sharing of art practices have resulted in the new work that you will see in ‘Other Transmissions.’ The artists are: Joe Beedles, James Desser, Amy Ellison, Frances Heap, Andrew Johnstone and John Powell-Jones, and facilitated by James Pollitt and Jennifer Gilbert from Venture Arts.
The new works created will be exhibited at Artlink alongside iconic pieces from the Whitworth’s Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection, one of the most significant public collections of Outsider Art in the UK, including work by Judith Scott and Henry Darger. Six students from the University of Salford have been documenting the residency throughout using photography, film and drawing, and their resulting works will be shown alongside the residency artist’s works at Artlink too.
Join Venture Arts as they present Conversations Series II to the public for the first time at Tate Exchange
A presentation of the work produced during Conversations Series II, a five-month long artistic collaboration which began by looking at how artists see themselves, how the art world sees them and the tricky labelling of art genres. The Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection housed at the Whitworth in Manchester was used as a starting point. Artists involved in the project will unveil their artistic journeys through the project, where six artists with and without learning disabilities worked equally together.
Expect a rich programme (available here) that will include presentations, sound and image, interventions, workshops, talks and new conversations. Venture Arts staff and artists, as well as artists involved in Conversations Series II will be present each day.
